Sarah was born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand on the 8th of September 1975 and moved to Perth, Australia 10 months later. She first started athletics when she was a 6 year old at the Rockingham Little Athletics Centre for the Bungaree club.
Sarah was a champion junior thrower in the hammer and discus in her teens until a water-skiing accident when she was 19yo. She was hospitalised for 2 weeks and in a hip to toe cast for 3 months after the accident. It caused severe damage to her right knee including partial paralysis of the lower leg. It took one year to walk again and six year's until she felt confident enough to try throwing the discus.
She met her future husband and coach Paul while returning to the sport when she was 26 years old. They were married a few years later and Sarah continued to compete in the throwing events as an 'able body' athlete until 2016 she was classified a 'para' athlete. Interestingly, Sarah also currently holds the able body Western Australian Masters 40-45 discus record of 37.66m.
